From July 22nd to 28th, 2019, the 9th International Conference on Sustainable Development in the Building and Environment(SuDBE2019)was held in the UK. The conference consisted of SuDBE2019 (Reading) and & International Forum on Green Building and Healthy Building (Cambridge).
The conference was organized by the Chongqing University, the University of Reading, UK, and the University of Cambridge, UK. And it was co-organized by China Green Building Council, National Center for International Research of Low-carbon & Green Buildings (Ministry of Science & Technology), Joint International Research Laboratory of Green Buildings & Built Environments (Ministry of Education), Technical Innovation Strategic Alliance of Healthy Building Industry, Southwest Green Building Base, China Academy of Building Research, China Southwest Architectural Design and Research Institute Co.,Ltd., Tsinghua University, Aalto University of Finland, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, University College London, Lawrence Berkeley Co-organized by the National Laboratory, the Imperial College London, and the IST, University of Lisbon, Portugal. 220 experts and scholars from 12 countries and regions including the United Kingdom, the United States, Denmark, Japan, Finland, Ireland, New Zealand, Portugal, France, Sweden and China attended the meeting, and there were 55 overseas personnel among them.
From July 22nd to 25th, 2019, SuDBE2019 (Reading) was held at the University of Reading, UK. Professor Dominik Zaum, the Vice President of the University of Reading, Professor Youwei Wang, the Director of the China Green Building Council, and Mr. George Adams, former Chairman of the Royal Registered Equipment Engineers Association (CIBSE), and the Chairman of the Conference, Professor Baizhan Li of Chongqing University delivered a speech in succession at the opening ceremony. Professor Bjarne W. Olesen of Technical University of Denmark, Professor Runming Yao of University of Reading, a National High Level Expert of Chongqing University, Professor Chimay Anumba of the University of Florida, an Academician of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and Professorate senior engineer Jun Wang, the Chairman of China Academy of Building Research, made a keynote report of the conference.



SuDBE2019 (Reading) conference set up 18 sub-meetings, 36 experts were invited to make a special report at the conference, including Professor Christopher Pain of Imperial College, Professor Tim Broyd of University College London, Professor Phil Jones of Cardiff University, Professor Tony Day of International Energy Research Center, Professor Hiroshi Yoshino of Tohoku University, Professor Risto Kosonen of Aalto University, Professor Steve Rowlingson of the University of Hong Kong, Professor Larry Bellamy of the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, Professor Armando Oliveira of the University of Porto, Portugal, Dr. Cathal Hoare of the University of Dublin and Dr. Niamh Murtagh of the University College of London. etc. The chairperson of the sub-meeting issued a certificate of honor and souvenirs for each invited expert.
More than 90 experts and scholars from Chongqing University, University of Reading, Tsinghua University, etc., research institutes, design consultants and equipment manufacturers made oral reports. The conference selected the“Best Report Award”,“Best Poster Award”and “Best Paper Award”, and Professor Andrew Baldwin presented the honorary certificate to the winners. On July 25th, the organizing committee arranged for the participants to visit the British Building Research Institute (BRE) and watch a number of green building technology application demonstration projects on-site.
From July 26th to 28th, 2019, International Forum on Green Building and Healthy Building were held at the University of Cambridge, UK. More than 100 experts and scholars from China Green Building Council, China Academy of Building Research, British Marish Consulting, Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology, Tsinghua University, and Zhejiang University attended the forum. National High-level Expert of Chongqing University, Professor Runming Yao of the University of Reading hosted the forum. Professor Alan Short of the University of Cambridge, UK, Professor Youwei Wang, Director of the China Green Building Committee, Professor Paul Linden of the University of Cambridge, Prof. Qingqin Wang, Deputy General Manager of the China Academy of Building Research, Mr. Jaya Skandamoorthy, President of Marish Consulting, UK, and Professor Angui Li of Xi'an University of Architecture and Technology made special reports. After the forum, on July 27th, 28th, the organizing committee arranged for the participants to visit the Here East Campus School of Architecture of UCL University, NW Bicester Ecological Town and Oxford University. So far, the 9th International Conference on Sustainable Development in the Building and Environment(SuDBE2019)& International Forum of Green Buildings and Healthy Buildings had come to a successful conclusion.



The 13th International Conference on Sustainable Development in the Building and Environment (SuDBE2025) was successfully held at the University of Cambridge
On the morning of July 28, 2025, the 13th International Conference on Sustainable Development in the Building and Environment (SuDBE2025) officially commenced at the University of Cambridge, UK.
The conference was jointly organized by Chongqing University and the University of Cambridge, co-hosted by the School of Civil Engineering of Chongqing University, National Centre for International Research of Low-carbon & Green Buildings (MOST), and Joint International Research Lab of Green Buildings & Built Environments (MOE). It was supported by the University of Reading, University College London, the China Association of Building Energy Efficiency (CABEE), the China Green Building Council of CSUS, and the China Academy of Building Research. The conference also received great support from the Administrative Center for China's Agenda 21, the British Consulate-General in Chongqing, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), Tsinghua University, and international journals such as Journal of Building Engineering, Building Simulation, and Intelligent Buildings International, as well as Chinese publications including Heating, Ventilating & Air Conditioning, Journal of Refrigeration, Building Energy Efficiency, and Building Science.
The conference was co-chaired by Professor Baizhan Li from Chongqing University, Professor Alan Short and Professor Ying Jin from the University of Cambridge. The academic committee was led by Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), Professor Tim Broyd at University College London; Professor Doug King, also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Professor Andrew Baldwin, a national high-level overseas talent at Chongqing University and professor at Loughborough University, UK. The conference secretariat comprised Professor Runming Yao and Professor Liu Hong from Chongqing University, Professor Emmanuel Essah from the University of Reading, and Associate Professor Shen Wei from University College London. Over 200 experts and scholars from 10 countries and regions, including China, the UK, Finland, Denmark, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Canada, Japan, and Hong Kong (China) attended the opening ceremony.
Professor Runming Yao chaired the opening ceremony and introduced the attending leaders and experts, and extended invitations to the co-chair Professor Ying Jin, Deputy Consul General Tim Standbrook from the British Consulate-General in Chongqing, and conference chair Professor Baizhan Li to deliver their welcome speeches.
Professor Ying Jin, Co-chair of the conference from the University of Cambridge, extended a warm welcome to all distinguished guests and experts from home and abroad. He emphasized that this year's SuDBE conference, focusing on cutting-edge topics of built environment and urban sustainable development, is both timely and significant in practical and academic terms. He expressed hope that the conference would facilitate international collaboration and application of green transition and low-carbon technologies, promoting deeper integration between scientific research and practical implementation. In conclusion, Professor Ying Jin wished the 13th SuDBE conference a complete success.
Mr. Tim Standbrook, Deputy Consul General of the British Consulate-General in Chongqing, began by expressing gratitude to the organizers for their invitation and spoke highly of the achievements in green development collaboration between China and the UK, while also sharing his expectations for future cooperation. He stated that the British Consulate-General in Chongqing firmly supports the conference and highly values its significant role in promoting Sino-UK exchanges and cooperation in sustainable development, low-carbon city construction, and related fields. He commended China's determination and accomplishments in green urban transformation and expressed hope for further deepening cooperation with China in sustainable development, particularly in the western regions of the country.

Professor Baizhan Li, chair of the conference from Chongqing University, delivered a welcome speech reviewing the development of the SuDBE conference since 2003. Having been successfully held 13 times across China, the UK, Finland, South Africa and other locations, the conference has been committed to advancing sustainable development in the built environment. He emphasized that since the beginning of this century, China's urbanization has progressed rapidly, and exploring a distinctive Chinese approach to urban development that suits national conditions must focus on enhancing the quality of new urbanization. In this process, promoting green and low-carbon transition has become particularly crucial. The SuDBE conference has facilitated interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral exchanges in green building technologies and culture, provided students with opportunities to understand global practices, and fostered research collaboration and integration with education. Professor Li expressed hope that this conference would further strengthen international cooperation, promote the translation of research outcomes and interdisciplinary development. He extended special thanks to all experts and participants for their support and contributions to the conference.
Subsequently, keynote speeches were delivered by Professor Alan Short from the University of Cambridge, Professor Bjame W. Olesen from the Technical University of Denmark, Professor Da Yan from Tsinghua University and Professor David Hancock from University College London.

Fourteen distinguished experts were invited to deliver keynote speeches on the first day, including Professor Christopher Pain from Imperial College London, Professor-level Senior Engineer Chong Meng from China Academy of Building Research, Professor Hui Xie from Chongqing University, Professor Sasan Sadrizadeh from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Professor Zhiwen Luo from Cardiff University, Professor Manuel Guedes from Instituto Superior Técnico, Professor Stefan Smith from University of Reading, Associate Professor Ying Xu from Tsinghua University, Professor Jianlin Liu from Donghua University, Associate Professor Chenqiu Du from Chongqing University, Professor Xiaodong Cao from Beihang University, Professor Sukumar Natarajan from University of Bath, Professor Wei Yu from Chongqing University and Professor James O'Donnell from University College Dublin. A total of 35 invited experts presented at the conference.
The conference will focus on eight core topics across eight thematic forums and one Chinese standards revision workshop. During the conference, the organizing committee will arrange technical visits for participants to prominent London sustainable and resilient urban projects.
The International Conference on Sustainable Development in the Building and Environment (SuDBE) was jointly established in 2003 by Chongqing University, the University of Cambridge, the University of Reading and other institutions. To date, thirteen sessions of the conference have been successfully held across China, the UK, Finland and South Africa, attracting over 3,000 participants from nearly 30 countries. It has become a highly regarded premium international academic conference series in the field.
From July 29 to August 2, 2024, The 12th International Conference on Sustainable Development in Building and Environment (SuDBE2024) & the 12th West Africa Built Environment Research Conference (WABER) were held at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. The conference was co-organized by the University of Witwatersrand and Chongqing University, and co-hosted by the School of Civil Engineering of Chongqing University, the National Center for International Research of Low-carbon & Green Buildings, and the Joint International Research Laboratory of Green Buildings & Built Environments. The conference was attended by 180 international experts and scholars from 22 countries and regions. The conference is centered on eight core topics, including the built environments in response to climate change, air quality, healthy buildings, thermal comfort, intelligent operation, etc. with a total of 32 sub-topics covering 21 thematic forums, 7 keynote reports, and 2 thematic workshops. This was followed by technical tours in Pretoria and Johannesburg.
The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Sam Laryea at the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.Prof. Sam Laryea delivered a welcoming speech and warmly welcomed the leaders, guests, experts, and scholars. Prof. Sam Laryea talked about the goals of SuDBE and WABER to address global challenges and promote sustainable development of building and environment worldwide. He emphasized the importance of face-to-face interaction with internationally renowned experts and scholars to promote research, improve research skills, educate researchers, and expand the network of partners. Prof. Sam Laryea wished the 12th SuDBE & 12th WABER Conference a successful outcome.
Prof. Baizhan Li, Chairman ofthe conference, delivered a welcome speech, in which he thanked and warmly welcomed all the leaders, guests, and participating experts, talked about the history and purpose of the SuDBEon Sustainable Development in the Building and Environment. He emphasized the importance of sustainable development of the built environment in response to global climate change in order to achieve the goals of energy saving and carbon emission reduction. Prof. Baizhan Li put forward the idea of cooperation between China's research related to the built environment in response to the "Belt and Road" scientific and technological innovation. The collaboration canenhance the understanding with counterparts in African countries, promote multilateral international scientific and technological cooperation, jointly respond to global challenges, and promote the sustainable development of the built environment around theworld.
Subsequently, Dr. Rakesh Singh of the University of Witwatersrand hosted the keynote speech of the conference. An invited keynote presentation entitled "Resilient and Sustainable Futures - Opportunities to Leverage Emerging Technologies" was made by Professor Chimay Anumba from University of Florida. Professor Chimay Anumbais aFellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering of the United Kingdom. An invited keynote presentation entitled "Role Of The Clientin Achieving Sustainable Built Environments" was given by Prof. Ron Watermeyer ofthe University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. Prof. Kathy Michell of the University of Cape Town, South Africa, delivered an invited keynotespeech entitled "Sustainable Urban Developmentand Management".Prof. Humphrey Danso fromAAMUSTED University, Ghana, delivered an invited keynote address entitled "Sustainability through Construction Materials".An invited keynote presentation entitled "Sustainability through Smart Infrastructures" was made by Professor Jeremy Gibberd of the University ofWitwatersrand. A 20-minute Q&A session with guests followed. On the 31st, Tim Broyd, a Member of the Royal Academy of Engineering, gave an invited keynote speech entitled "The Useof Digital Techniquesto Improvethe Sustainabilityof Buildings". Prof. Borong Lin of Tsinghua Universitygave an invited keynote speech entitled "Artificial Intelligence and Carbon Neutrality: Several Case Studies".



One of the sub-forums of the conference, "Low Carbon Cities and Carbon Neutral Development in Urban Areas", was successfully co-organized by China Academy of Building Research and Chongqing University. Principal investigators of China's 14th Five-Year Plan projects “Joint Research and Demonstration of Key Technologies for Carbon Reduction in Urban Areas and Neighborhoods” and “Demonstration of Key Technologies for Carbon Neutral Low Carbon Cities” discussed the sustainable development of low-carbon cities with international experts. The international experts came from South Africa, Ghana and other "Belt and Road" regions, and they jointly explored low-carbon city development and cooperation towards the goal of carbon neutrality.
The conference also organized technical visits to the Digital Mining Laboratory ofthe University ofWitwatersrand, the Constitution Hill and the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg as well as the Union Building in Pretoria. They also visited the Green 5 Star Buildings includingthe Anglo American Head Office Building and the Discovery Building in Johannesburg.


At the closing ceremony of the conference, Prof. Baizhan Li, President of the conference, made a closing speech and expressed his sincere thanks to the delegates. Prof. Sam Laryea and Prof. Runming Yao presented certificates to thechairs of the conference. Prof. Chimay Anumba and Prof. Tim Broyd presented certificates to the three students who won the best poster awards. Prof. Baizhan Li presented certificates to 17 volunteers of the conference. Finally, the Secretary General of the conference, Prof. Runming Yao of Chongqing University, announced that the next SuDBE conference will be planned to be held in the UK in 2025.

Since 2003, SuDBE Conference has gained the full support of many famous universities, enterprises and government departments. The conference has been organized in the UK, South Africa, Finland, and China. The conferencehas become a high-level international academic conferences in the field of sustainable development of buildings. This year's SuDBE conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, responds positively to the national "Belt and Road" Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Action Plan, enhances the understanding with counterparts in African countries. The conference promotes multilateral international scientific and technological exchanges, the sustainable development of building and environment, and jointly responding to global challenges.
The 11th International Conference on Sustainable Development in Building and Environment (SuDBE2023)
The 11th International Conference on Sustainable Development in Building and Environment (SuDBE2023) was grandly held at Alto University, Finland from 14-18th August, 2023.
The conference was jointly organized by Chongqing University and Alto University, co-hosted by School of Civil Engineering, Chongqing University, National Center for International Research of Low-carbon & Green Buildings, and Joint International Research Laboratory of Green Buildings & Built Environments, and co-organized by Finnish Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (FiSIAQ), China Green Building Council of CSUS, Tsinghua University, China Academy of Building Research, University of Cambridge, University of Reading, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and Imperial College London. The conference received substantial support from the Administrative Center for China’s Agenda 21, Ministry of the Environment of Finland, and Granlund Group.
Professor Baizhan Li from Chongqing University and Professor Risto Kosonen from Aalto University were conference chairs, and the academic committees were chaired by Professor Xuhong Zhou, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering and the former President of Chongqing University; Professor Alan Short from University of Cambridge; and Professor Stuart Green from University of Reading. 180 experts and scholars from 14 countries and regions attended the opening ceremony, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Romania, Japan, South Korea, and China. Among them, more than 50 were international experts.
Opening ceremony and technical sessions were held on 15-16th August. At the opening ceremony, the conference chair Professor Risto Kosonen from Aalto University warmly welcomed the experts and scholars from home and abroad. He described the research background of sustainable built environment, highlighted the significance of research in built environment, and explained the possible practical approaches to carbon reduction and temperature control from the aspects of flexible regulation of building energy, and utilization of renewable energy. Professor Baizhan Li, the conference chair from Chongqing University, narrated the ideals and the two-decade history of SuDBE International Conference. He emphasized the theme of the conference on sustainable development in built environment, and hoped that this conference would contribute to strengthening research exchanges in the field of built environment, further deepening international cooperation in the transformation of scientific research results and teaching practice experience, and promoting interdisciplinary integration.
The conference revolved around nine core themes focusing on climate responsive built environments, air quality and healthy building, thermal comfort and intelligent operation, low-carbon technology and energy systems, sustainable urban renewal, building technology and performance, sustainable solutions for affordable retrofitting of European domestic buildings, occupant targeted ventilation for sustainable buildings and smart services in sustainable buildings. These themes were addressed through 11 technical sessions, and 3 thematic workshops, including 27 invited speeches and 66 student presentations. Miimu Airaksinen, Senior Vice President of SRV Group Ltd., Minttu Vilander, Director of Communication and Sustainable Development at Sitowise, Professor Borong Lin, Associate Dean of the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University, and Professor Christopher Pain from Imperial College London were invited to deliver keynote speeches.



Technical tours were on 17-18th August. Aalto University, Ramboll Village, Halton Group and Granlund Group received 90 participants to conduct technical visits, learning and communication on the topics of sustainable energy system development on campus, sustainable design and smart operation and maintenance of commercial buildings, technologies and solutions for high-quality indoor climate conditions, and architectural design in the context of climate change.


10 international experts were invited to evaluate students’ oral and poster presentations and nominate the Best Presentation and Best Poster Awards. 12 winners were awarded with certificates at the closing ceremony. Additionally, 25 technical sessions chairs were awarded chair certificates and 21 volunteer students were awarded volunteer certificates.

Starting from 9:00 am on 11th December , 2021, the opening ceremony and the keynote conference of the 10th International Conference on Sustainable Development in Building and Environment (SuDBE2021) and the 11th Conference of Green Building Council Alliance for Hot Summer & Cold Winter Climate Zones were grandly held in Chongqing, China. The scientific committee was chaired by Prof. Xuhong Zhou, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and former president of Chongqing University. The series of biennially International Conference on Sustainable Development in Building and Environment (SuDBE) was initiated in 2003 by Prof. Baizhan Li, the Director of National Centre for International Research of Low-carbon Green Buildings, and it was co-organized by the University of Cambridge and University of Reading. Nine conferences have been successfully held so far. The SuDBE conference mainly focuses on the topics of sustainable design and operation, building energy efficiency, green building, low-carbon technology, ecological cities, renewable energy, thermal comfort, indoor air quality and so on. It has attracted scholars worldwide to share their experiences. . The conference theme is "Contribution of Green Buildings to Carbon Emission Peak and Carbon Neutrality". The conference aims to promote interdisciplinary and collaborative cooperation, and to discuss the timely developed direction and mission of green and low-carbon buildings in China in the context of the "3060” carbon target.

The conference aims to contributing to the national "3060” carbon target with different sessions’ theme on climate adaptations/solutions to urban/construction, green structural engineering, low carbon green geotechnical engineering, indoor environment & comfort and health, sustainable buildings and building energy efficiency, smart low carbon development of urban gas, smart technology and green operation management. The conference comprises 21 keynote speeches, 7 subject forums and 2 student forums. The conference invited 19 experts from 9 countries and region including UK, Norway, Germany, Finland and Sweden to give special reports. More than 150 experts, scholars and student representatives from Chongqing University, Reading University, Tsinghua University and other famous universities, research institutes, consulting companies, design companies, construction units, construction enterprises, supervision enterprises, and equipment manufacturers at home and abroad made online and on-stage oral presentations. The conference was visited online more than 10,000 times, and the conference photos were viewed online more than 5,000 times.

The 7th International Conference on Sustainable Development in the Building and Environment (SuDBE2015) & UK-China Forum was held at the University of Reading and the University of Cambridge, UK, from 28 to 31 July 2015. The conference was co-organized by Chongqing University, the University of Reading and the University of Cambridge, with the support of the National Centre for International Research of Low-carbon and Green Buildings and 111 Centre of Low-carbon Green Buildings and Built Environments. The British Building Research Establishment (BRE), the China Green Building Council, the China Academy of Urban Planning & Design, the Shenzhen Institute of Building Research Co., Ltd., the Green Building Base in Southwest China and the Chongqing Green Building Council are also jointly involved. About 180 participants from 20 countries and regions including the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland, Netherlands, Italy, Turkey, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, India, Korea, Hong Kong and the Mainland of China attended the conference. A delegation consisting of leaders from the Office of Science and Technology, Graduate School, Department of Laboratory and Equipment Management and Financial Affairs Office of Chongqing University attended the meeting.
The SuDBE2015 conference was officially held at the University of Reading at 9:00am on 28 July. The opening ceremony was chaired by Professor Stuart Green, Co-Chair of the conference and Dean of the School of Built Environment at the University of Reading. Professor Gavin Brooks, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading, delivered a speech on behalf of the University of Reading welcoming experts from all over the world. The conference chair, Professor Koen Steemers from the University of Cambridge, delivered a speech on behalf of the conference founder and co-chair, Professor Baizhan Li of Chongqing University, and reviewed the history of the international conference series on Sustainable Development in the Building and Environment (SuDBE). The conference was successfully hosted by Chongqing University in Chongqing for six sessions from 2003 to 2013, in association with the University of Cambridge and the University of Reading. This was the first time that it has been co-hosted outside of China.

On October 25, 2013, the 6th International Conference on Building and Environmental Sustainability of Chongqing University, the 3rd “Green Building Alliance Conference in Hot Summer and Cold Winter Region”, the 2nd “International Conference on Sustainable Urban Development of Chongqing University” and the inaugural meeting of the "International Green Campus Alliance" was grandly opened in Chongqing. More than 40 experts and representatives from nearly 20 countries and regions including the United States, Britain, Ireland, Finland, Sweden, Japan, Denmark, Portugal, New Zealand, Serbia, Egypt, South Africa, South Korea and Hong Kong, and experts and scholars from 30 universities in China and more than 10 institutes,and leaders of the provincial and municipal construction departments of the Green Building Alliance in the hot summer and cold regions, and representatives of well-known enterprises in the construction field attended the meeting.

On October 28, 2011, The 5th International Conference on Sustainable Development in Building And Environment (SuDBE 2011) and World Renewable Energy Asia Regional Conference were grandly held in Chongqing. Professor Li Baizhan of Chongqing University served as the chairman of the conference. The conference was hosted by Chongqing University, co-organized by the World Renewable Energy Society, University of Cambridge, University of Reading, University of Purdue, University of Aalborg, Tsinghua University, Hong Kong university and Central South University. The conference was strongly supported by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Chongqing Municipal Government, the Chongqing Municipal Science and Technology Commission, Chongqing Municipal Construction Committee, Chongqing Foreign Economic and Trade Commission, China Green Building and Energy Conservation Professional Committee, and Chongqing Green Building Professional Committee, the Wang Kuancheng Education Foundation and other institutions. More than 300 experts, scholars, students and representatives from over 20 countries and regions including the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Portugal, Sweden, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and the Mainland of China attended the meeting. Nearly 120 overseas representatives, including internationally renowned university presidents, deans, directors, well-known professors, international society, industry association presidents, international academic journal editors and other international leading experts attended the conference. The conference received more than 500 papers and abstracts, of which nearly 200 papers were included in various SCI and EI journals.
